Putting can often make the difference between a good round and a great round in golf. For young golfers, understanding the fundamentals of putting is crucial. Here’s how your child can elevate their putting skills and become a superstar on the green.

CHEER RAH to lower your score!

(80% Read)+(12% Aim)+(8% Hit) = 100% Success!

Set yourself up for a successful putt! Confidence is key when striving to avoid three-putts and achieve a lower putting average. The acronym "RAH!" acts as a strong mental anchor, promoting self-assurance and highlighting the value of a solid pre-putt routine—all while encouraging young golfers to maintain a steady pace of play.

Reading the green is a crucial skill for successful putting, relying on keen observation with both your eyes and feet. It involves assessing the putting surface to predict how the ball will roll toward the hole. This process includes evaluating the slope, grain, speed, and overall contours of the green to determine the best line and pace for an effective putt.

Aligning the line on your ball offers two key advantages. First, it helps you commit to your aiming point—the spot where gravity, as Sir Isaac Newton would explain, takes control. Second, it reveals the quality of your putting stroke. Does the line wobble like an old wagon wheel, or does it roll smoothly like a perfectly tight Warren Moon spiral?

The final step is achieving the ultimate reward—for me, during my tournament days, the sweet sound of the ball dropping into the cup was like an old-school cash register ringing, Cha-Ching!—the sound of making money!

This stage requires a rock-solid setup routine called GASS, which I’ll break down in a future post.

Once you step up to the ball, the clock starts ticking. The longer you stand there, the more tension creeps in—especially when the stakes are high. The secret to a solid stroke? Let go of the outcome and just hit the ball!
